SEEKONK – Ledgemont Country Club proved to be a challenge for the field of 120 players as only one finished the first round under-par at the 41st Stroke Play Championship.  

 

With most players looking and expecting to go low, reality signaled the opposite.  

 

The lowest score from Monday’s round turned out to be 2-under par, but three players walk into Tuesday’s 36-hole marathon with a score of even par. 

 

Jonathan Pannone, Mike Caparco, and Jacob Winn top the leaderboard in the championship at even-par (71) with plenty of work still left to accomplish, but with plenty of players creeping at the doorstep. 

 

In the Senior Division, Darren Corrente of Wannamoisett Country Club finished Monday’s round with a score of 2-under par. The Senior Division will battle it out in an 18-hole shootout to decide a winner Tuesday.  

 

“The course was nice. This is a phenomenal layout, for sure… All in all, I thought the course held up pretty nicely,” said Corrente as he praised the condition of Ledgemont Country Club. 

 

“I started off with a three putt on one for par … But I made a couple of birdies on two and three … I think it got me in a confident state of mind at that point and I played pretty solidly,” he added.

 

Corrente will be pushing on the gas Tuesday, stating he will feel “a couple behind.” 

 

“I’m going to keep trying to make a few birdies out there,” he said. “They’re there to get. I think someone could go low tomorrow. I’m not looking at the scoreboard, I’m just going to try to shoot a good score tomorrow and hopefully it all works out.”  

 

Champions will be crowned Tuesday and with 36 holes still left to play, whoever has the mindset of a marathon runner will be very successful.
